How to get a Rainbow Seed
Rainbow Seeds cannot be purchased. They spawn on the map during a Rainbow Moon and are picked up off the ground.
Spawn chance scales with the number of players in the server and is higher in public servers than private ones.
What a Rainbow Seed grows
The in-game text reads: "Upon placing in a garden plot, it will grow a random Seed Shop plant with the rainbow variant. Rarer plants have a rarer chance to appear."
As with the Gold Seed, planting one guarantees a mutation on the resulting crop.

Not the same as the Rainbow Sack
The original Grow a Garden has no Rainbow Seed. Its Rainbow Sack is a different item — a seed pack from Exotic Seed Packs — so anything you read about that does not apply here.
