A guild starts at 20 slots and can be upgraded in steps:

Why guilds matter
Guild Competitions award pets that cannot be obtained any other way. The Black Dragon goes to top-ranked guilds and the Ice Serpent to the band below.
That makes guild membership the only route to those pets — no shop, no egg, no map spawn.
Joining and inviting
Invites are sent from the Guild page's Invite tab, and accepted or declined through your mailbox — which is easy to miss if you are only checking it for deliveries.
